Where is my data stored?

Exclusively locally on your device, in an AES-256-encrypted container. There is no cloud synchronisation — no one but you can access your data, not even us as developers.

What happens if I forget my master password?

Since your data is only encrypted locally on your device, no one but you has access. Without master password or correct recovery hint question, the data cannot be recovered.

Precautions against data loss:

  • Set up a recovery hint question right after installation – a key recovery path in case of forgotten master password
  • Additionally create an emergency PDF with its own password and store the printout in a safe place (safe, trusted person)
  • Choose a different password for the emergency PDF than your master password
How do I migrate to a new smartphone?
  1. In the app, open the archiving function (icon at the bottom left of the vault list).
  2. At the top, enter an archive password you can remember well.
  3. Tap CREATE ARCHIVE and choose a target (cloud, USB stick, share via email to yourself).
  4. On the new device: install MyLocalSafe, run through the setup and choose the ZIP file at the "Bring data" step.
  5. Enter the archive password – your entries, photos and documents are immediately available.

Note: Biometrics must be set up anew on the new device, which is normal for security reasons. Master password and recovery hint question are taken over from the archive.

Can I pass individual entries to others?

Yes, via the sharing area (icon in the vault list). You can transfer one or more entries in two ways:

  • By QR code: the receiving device scans the code directly from the screen – ideal when both devices are side by side.
  • By file: an encrypted file is created that you can pass on by any means (email, messenger, USB).

To receive, switch to the "Receive" tab in the sharing area and scan the QR code or select the file. The transfer is encrypted and works without cloud or server – the data goes directly between the two devices only.

Why are my passwords not suggested during autofill?
  1. Check in the Android settings whether "MyLocalSafe" is active as an autofill service.
  2. Important for Chrome: Go to Chrome → Settings → Autofill services and activate "Autofill with another service".
  3. Check whether battery optimisation is disabled for MyLocalSafe.
  4. Briefly deactivate and reactivate the service in the Android settings if it does not respond.
Can I create a password directly when signing up?

Yes. When you sign up on a website or in an app and tap the password field, MyLocalSafe offers a "Generate password" entry in the autofill suggestion. Tapping it opens the generator: you can choose between a memorable password (built from words) and a strong random password, set the length, and re-roll or edit the password. "Use password" inserts it into the field.

If you then save the credentials via autofill, the new entry opens directly so you can add a title and notes.

Why do I sometimes have to enter my master password even though I have biometrics set up?

For particularly sensitive actions — such as creating an archive, exporting an emergency PDF or importing an archive — the app asks again for your identity. On devices with biometrics, this happens via fingerprint; without biometrics, via master password.

Reason: Even if your phone is unlocked and someone briefly had access, such actions should not be possible unnoticed. That is a deliberate protection measure.

What happens if I change my fingerprint on the device?

For security reasons, the existing biometric link is then deleted. At the next login, you'll need your master password once, after which you can re-enable biometrics as usual. This way, the app prevents newly added fingerprints from gaining access unintentionally.

How long does a copied password stay in the clipboard?

60 seconds. After that, the app automatically deletes the password — even if you have closed the app in the meantime or switched to another app.

Two exceptions:

  • If you copy something else in the meantime, the new content is preserved
  • On Android 13 and later, the copied content is additionally marked as "sensitive" in the clipboard preview and not displayed in plaintext
How do I delete several entries at once?

In the vault list, long-press an entry – this activates selection mode. The entries now show checkboxes; tap all the ones you want to remove. Use the bar at the bottom to delete the selected entries together.

Before the final deletion, a confirmation prompt appears showing the number of affected entries. Deletion cannot be undone.

What does the note on hardware encryption mean?

Some devices (especially older or very cheap ones) don't have a specialised security chip for key management. The app still works on these devices, but the keys are then in software storage.

This is sufficient for everyday use but provides less protection against advanced attacks. You can check at any time what protection your device offers: Settings → App info → "Hardware encryption: check".

Why does importing a CSV file fail?

Make sure the CSV file follows the required format:

  • Semicolon-separated fields
  • Column order: Title; User; Password; Website; Notes; 2FA
  • The first row is skipped as a header
  • Passwords with special characters (such as ; , ") should be in quotes: "Pa;ss;word"
Can I import my data from KeePass?

Yes. MyLocalSafe supports importing KeePass 2.x XML files (.xml). Export your database in KeePass as XML (in KeePassXC: Database → Export → As XML) and select the file when importing into MyLocalSafe. Titles, usernames, passwords, web addresses, notes and – if present – TOTP/2FA entries are imported.

Note: the XML file contains your passwords in plain text; delete it from your device again after the import.

Does MyLocalSafe cost anything?

The basic version is free with a limit of 10 entries. The Premium version costs 14.99 € as a one-time purchase (no subscription, no hidden costs) and unlocks:

  • Unlimited number of entries
  • Document attachments for entries
  • Emergency PDF export
  • Full 2FA support

Buy once, use Premium features without a subscription in the current version.

Is the app developed continuously?

Yes, MyLocalSafe is actively developed. Updates contain security improvements, new functions and bug fixes. All updates are free for already purchased Premium versions.

Where do I find the legal information?

All legal documents can be found both in the app under Settings → Legal and here on the website:
